Horticultural society marks its roots
Yesterday a ceremony was held at Leeds Civic Hall to mark the North of England Horticultural Society's 100th anniversary.
The society, which organises the Harrogate Spring and Autumn Flower Shows, was inaugurated in the Lord Mayor's Rooms in Leeds on January 6, 1911, and yesterday it marked the occasion with a celebration attended by members of the society and other guests.
When founded in 1911 its purpose was to arrange first-class shows where northern exhibits could be judged by standards suitable for the colder climates in the North.
