ENGLAND'S highest mainland railway station, Dent Station, has won two awards in recognition of its importance to tourism and railway heritage.
The station, which is now privately owned and rented out for self-catering holidays, scooped a National Railway Heritage Award and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors North West Tourism and Leisure Award.

Located on the Settle-Carlisle line, the station was opened in 1877 and is eight miles from the famous Ribblehead Viaduct. The station sits 1,150ft above sea level.

To celebrate the awards the steam train Oliver Cromwell called at the station yesterday – the first steam train to stop at the station for 25 years. Those aboard were treated to ales from Dent Brewery, local pies and a selection of Wensleydale cheeses.
