A couple who dialled 999 to report a suspicious noise received a text message from police saying there were no officers to investigate.
Lloyd and Suzanne Bishop, of Cambridge, were woken by what they thought was a burglar smashing a padlock at about 5am on Sunday.

When they looked out of a window, they saw a man running down the street. The couple went back to bed and were woken by a text message saying the police "couldn't get any officers out".

Mrs Bishop, 29, said she was not impressed with the "detextive" work.

A Cambridgeshire police spokeswoman said: "Due to the number of emergency calls, we were unable to send an officer straight to the scene."

She said there had been no subsequent confirmation that any crime had taken place.
