Carbon Clean: Yvette Cooper hails Huddersfield opportunities from firm's Indian expansion

A UK clean tech company has opened a £7.6 million research and testing centre in Mumbai to help drive its expansion into India – with key components of the new centre’s technology to be manufactured in Huddersfield.

The company’s expansion is expected to support around 250 UK jobs, including in engineering and project delivery linked to Huddersfield.

As the business continues to expand, it is expected to support around 24 UK suppliers employing more than 3,000 people. This includes up to 150 roles at Thomas Broadbent and Sons in Huddersfield, spanning engineering, technical design and strengthening advanced manufacturing in the North of England.

The company’s international growth is expected to generate around £83 million in economic value for the UK from increased sales of its machines over the next five years, as global demand for its technology increases.

It comes as Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper visited India last week, where she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen economic ties and back British businesses like Carbon Clean expanding in the country. The visit comes as the UK builds on its trade deal with India, signed in July 2025,

The Foreign Secretary and Yorkshire MP said: “Our partnership with India – strengthened by the landmark UK-India trade deal – is creating real opportunities for UK firms to grow their exports overseas, and that will in turn support good skilled jobs here at home, including in places like Huddersfield.

“By backing British companies to succeed around the world, we are also delivering jobs for communities back home.”

Carbon Clean’s growth has been supported by the UK Government from its early stages, including an initial £3.5 million grant that enabled the development and scaling up of its technology in the UK.

Aniruddha Sharma, Chair and CEO, Carbon Clean, said: “Opening our new research and testing centre in Mumbai is a strategic step in scaling our technology, and reflects the strength of the UK-India partnership that has supported Carbon Clean throughout its journey.

"As we grow internationally, we remain firmly committed to the UK and to regions such as Huddersfield, where world-class engineering expertise is helping to advance industrial decarbonisation.

“This growth will deliver economic value back to the UK, supporting skilled jobs and reinforcing our position as a global leader in carbon capture.”

Carbon Clean’s technology captures carbon emissions from factories before they reach the atmosphere, helping industries like steel and cement - key to Yorkshire’s economy – improve the environmental impact of their operations.

The Global innovation Centre in Navi, Mumbai is being used to test and improve Carbon Clean’s technology so it can be rolled out more widely.

Trade between the UK and India was worth £48 billion in 2025, with UK exports exceeding £19 billion annually, underlining the scale of opportunity for British firms.
