Law firm creates new jobs after expanding business immigration advice service for employers

Yorkshire law firm Torque Law is creating new jobs after expanding its business immigration advice service for employers.

The firm, based in Upper Poppleton, York, has appointed two new team members: Rosie Cowling, who joins as an associate solicitor from Minster Law, and Sarah Martin, who joins as a Paralegal from Knights.

The firm’s growth to a six-person fee earner team is in response to a successful 12 months and an increase in demand from regional, national and international clients.

Torque Law has plans for further recruitment this year.

Partner Emma Whiting said: “We are thrilled that Rosie and Sarah have decided to come and join Team Torque, and further their careers here. We are very confident that they will play a pivotal role in the further development of the firm at this exciting time.”

Meanwhile, the Torque law team is continuing to host free virtual seminars on topical employment issues and common challenges for employers.

The next two sessions will focus on absence management on April 19 and May 4.

According to official data, 30.8m working days were lost to absence in 2021-22, costing the UK economy about £20.6bn.

With the cost of sickness-related absence set to increase with the threat to health from the cost-of-living crisis, the Torque Law team is hosting two virtual coffee mornings dedicated to looking at how employers can best manage employee absences in the workplace, including the challenges posed by long-term absence, strategies to support employees to minimise absence, including the effective engagement of medical professionals, and how to avoid the inevitable legal pitfalls along the way.

The first session will focus on the relevant legal framework when managing attendance, the conditions that may amount to a protected disability, as well as exploring the duty on employers to make reasonable adjustments when managing attendance, and consider strategies and tactics for employers to support employees and to reduce absenteeism.

The second session will feature specialist occupational health adviser Andrea Smith from York OHS.Visit torquelaw.co.uk/events
