Families looking for a nursery to GCSE education which delivers results in a happy setting need to consider Cundall Manor, says the new Headmaster at the helm.

The new Headmaster at Cundall Manor School, a small co-ed day and boarding school with high expectations, is hoping to attract new families to the school who are keen for an education setting that works for them from ages 2 to 16.

Chris James-Roll has taken over at Cundall Manor School in Cundall, York, a school that aims to excel on many levels, but most importantly combining academic and sporting success with happy, well-rounded pupils, in a vibrant and happy community.

Value Added education

“We are a small co-ed day and boarding school with high expectations and a proven track record to deliver both in and outside the classroom."“We are a small co-ed day and boarding school with high expectations and a proven track record to deliver both in and outside the classroom."

Parents may not be overly familiar with what Value Added means, but at Cundall Manor it means that pupils will perform better, based on robust data from the CAT4 test they took when they entered the school, which predicts GSCE grades. A CAT4 test assesses the ability to problem solve. In 2022, pupils at the school on average, received a grade 1.6 higher than they had been predicted in their CAT4 test. This was a real credit to their own hard work, their families’ support, and the positive environment for learning and developing at the school.

Statistically it has been shown that Cundall Manor pupils will achieve on average 1.6 higher marks on their GCSE grade in every subject. These statistics come from CAT4 data analysis from the company GL Assessments, which provides the tests and analyses data across the UK.

Mr James-Roll added: “Statistically we have shown that our pupils will achieve on average a grade 1.6 points higher at GCSE in all subjects, than predicted by CAT4. A Cundall education can make this happen.”

How does success develop at the school?

Cundall Manor has challenging schemes of work taught by dedicated teachers to happy children in small class sizes, offering more teacher and pupil contact in lessons. Due to this, Cundall Manor can improve GCSE results and can add, on average, 1.6 to each pupil’s grades, in every subject.

Cundall Manor pupils interact with teachers who know them well and who can support them in their learning. Smaller class sizes are less distracting for pupils who are able flourish in creative learning spaces.

While all schools will measure and evaluate pupils through their own form of testing, Cundall Manor is confident they offer “outstanding value” thanks to their GCSE results, from 2022.

Extra support

There’s help available to all pupils, either all year round or when needed, with optional Saturday morning GCSE revision classes held within the school, something that is unique to Cundall Manor.

This extra opportunity to study, says Mr James-Roll, really enhances pupils’ learning experiences and helps them to succeed.

Sporting life

Sport is a huge part of the Cundall Manor experience, and one that draws families in from around the region. Pupils play on average six hours of sport a week – excluding fixtures – helping their physical and mental wellbeing, together with learning teamwork and resilience.

With 28 acres of school grounds, there’s plenty of room for sport and, with a busy North Yorkshire Independent Schools fixtures league, and national school competitions, Cundall Manor are champions across hockey, cricket and rugby. The pupils are inspired to excel thanks to a team of dedicated and professional coaching staff.

Girls and boys excel in school fixtures as well as at county level and many of the talented sports pupils are inspired to compete outside of school time. Cundall pupils are also competitive swimmers, go-kart champions and outstanding equestrian competitors. Their love of sports all starts at Cundall.

Warm welcome

The Headmaster added: “Our school is popular with large families as we offer the best of both worlds for children aged 2 to 16 and we are proven to really deliver when it comes to improving academic outcomes with our outstanding value added statistics.

“Cundall pupils can and they do succeed, not only on the sports field but in the classroom, also.”
