Holiday park expansion approved despite being 'totally unsuitable' as it's next to homes

Councillors have approved the expansion of a holiday park despite fears from locals it would be totally unsuitable for their village.

East Riding Council’s Western Area Planning Sub-Committee voted to pass plans to expand Croft Park, off Rowley Road, Little Weighton, after visiting the site. Park Manager Paul Arksey said 11 extra lodges was a small expansion supported locally which stood to bring economic benefits, with steps taken to curb the effect on neighbouring homes.

But objector Moira Adeney said their quiet residential area was not suitable for the up to 38 lodges permitted on the site which she likened to a small housing estate. The approval of the plans comes after the committee put them on hold in August to visit the park, bolster landscaping requirements and enquire about drainage.

Objectors claimed local sewage systems which have already overflowed would could not cope with more lodges but Yorkshire Water made no objection to them. The park is now set to expand onto land east of existing lodges, outside of the development limits of Little Weighton. The new lodges would border homes in New Village Road to the north and businesses to the south.

A total of 25 objections were lodged against the plans but 27 comments were also made supporting the plans.

Mr Arksey told councillors lodges were occupied by mature and decent owners and he had spoken with neighbours to try and address their worries.

The applicant said: “I manage and live in a beautiful park in a pretty village. It’s a site that’s supported by lodge owners, its neighbours and suppliers. Many of the lodge owners are retired professionals, they’re honest people and they’re my neighbours too.”

Mrs Adeney said the lodges were not subject to rules as stringent as those for homes but would have a similar effect, with each having parking for two cars.

The objector said: “We live in a small secluded place, we’re a community that helps each other, that’s why people live here. We’ve met with people from Croft Park but that doesn’t change the fact that this expansion is totally unsuitable, this area isn’t a tourist resort. It’s a densely-packed cluster of second homes that will alter a quiet area.”
