Warning over fake ‘water board’ staff

HOMES in parts of West Yorkshire are being targeted by bogus callers pretending to be water board officials so they can gain entry and steal their possessions.

Yorkshire Water issued the warning after police were called to a number of addresses in Brighouse, Leeds and Bradford where burglars have been pretending to be from the company.

West Yorkshire Police say the burglars often target the elderly, using tactics such as claiming to be calling on behalf of the ‘water board’ or ‘gas board’.

A spokesman said: “Genuine workers representing service companies will carry identification with them, or will be happy to let you check their credentials with their office while they wait. Do not feel like you have to invite them in to your house. They should also not appear unannounced.”

Yorkshire Water said residents can check callers’ identification by calling 0800 1387878.
