Give engineer her due

From: Roger Haw, Old Manor Drive, Oxspring, Sheffield.

YOU describe Pam Liversidge (the incoming Master Cutler) as “an engineer by trade” (Yorkshire Post, September 15).

This she certainly is not. She is “an engineer by profession” being both a chartered engineer and a past President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

A correct description would afford your readers clarity in understanding the important contributions that engineers make to society and may even encourage young people to consider the profession as a career choice.

Slogan against holiday risks

From: Trev Bromby, Sculcoates Lane, Hull.

RECENTLY Topman fashion was slated for tasteless T-shirt slogans. The one slogan I would like to see worldwide is: “Backpackers! It can happen to you!” When are these and other travellers going to heed this message? Though I have every sympathy for the family and friends of victims abroad, I fail to understand the blind logic of the people involved. Not since the picnicking tours to watch the Crimean War from hill tops have so many people indulged in holiday madness. Put some thought into your plans. Me? I’m off to Butlins.

Staying put

From: Godfrey Bloom, Ukip MEP for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire and Ukip. Rural Affairs Spokesman.

IS not the whole point of being a traveller is that you travel? Or am I missing something? People in Dale Farm have been there longer than most people who have a house and mortgage.

English test

From: FE Sharpe, Elburton Road, Plymstock, Plymouth.
