Concerned residents await information about infamous “Holmfield Hum” noise ‘badly affecting health’
The noise, which is heard by some residents of Holmfield, in Halifax, but not others, has badly affected the health of those who can.
At July’s meeting of the full Calderdale Council, it was revealed the findings of a recent report into the issue would be released to complainants within a few weeks.

Hide AdCouncil Cabinet member for Public Services and Communities, Coun Jenny Lynn (Lab, Park), says people were now being updated on the report’s findings.
“We know how difficult the alleged noises are for some residents.
“We have taken their concerns very seriously and have been committed to keeping the complainants, ward councillors and MP informed about our investigations throughout.
“We are in the process of updating people on the investigation findings and expect to complete this by mid-September, taking into account everyone’s availability,” she said.

But council officers’ findings are being checked by an independent noise consultant and those concerned kept informed of the results and what happens next.
Coun Lynn was answering a question posed by Nikki Kelly, who stood for the Conservatives in May’s local elections, in the public question time section of a meeting of the full Calderdale Council.
Ms Kelly said that on July 8 the council’s Environmental Health team had received a report from a private contractor with findings regarding the Holmfield Hum, and asked for an update to be provided.

Hide AdCoun Lynn said the case was long-standing and complex, and extensive efforts had been made by council officers investigating.
But, she reported: “At this time council officers have no evidence of a statutory noise nuisance – be we do recognise that the noise being heard by some residents is impacting on the well-being of those individuals.
“Officers believe they have now exhausted all reasonable lines of inquiry to resolve the issue.”
