Yorkshire town to get new roundabout so more than 300 homes can be built

A Yorkshire town is set for more than 300 new homes and extra care apartments, but a roundabout by a nearby major road must be built first.

East Riding Council’s planning committee backed plans for 313 homes and 68 extra care flats, in Driffield’s Cemetery Lane, on Thursday (Oct 12).

Councillors backed the plans on the condition that no homes or the care home are built until the four-arm roundabout by the A614 is finished.

Developers Homes England stated the homes would take up one part of a wider area set aside for hundreds of new homes north east of Driffield town centre.

It comes as concerns were previously raised over separate planning applications within the same area over an influx of vehicles without improving roads.

Driffield and Rural’s Coun Matt Rogers said a new roundabout on the A614 still had to be built during a hearing of separate plans for 200 homes in June.

Councillors feared that the proposed access route of Long Lane would go from being a narrow road to a busy rat run.

The councillor said: “The roads might not be able to take the extra traffic but the residents can’t.”

Plans for stated there would be a mix of two, three and four bedroom homes built, including terraces, semi-detached and detached ones. There are also plans for one and two bed maisonettes and apartments, along with the 68 extra care apartments.

The entrance to the site, off the A614, would feature of north eastern gateway with a pocket park, with some of the homes facing onto hedgerows and trees.

The masterplan for the site also includes children’s play areas and ponds to help with drainage and wildlife. Plans stated the development would be designed to integrate well into Driffield.

They stated: “The scheme offers a high-quality development, provides opportunities for healthy lifestyle through the site’s countryside edge, proposed open spaces and pedestrian and cycle linkages to the town centre and beyond. The design proposals have been formulated through a comprehensive understanding of the site and surroundings.”
