Twins take identical path into Army life

TWIN brothers Martin and Nathan Slater enlisted into the Army on the same day and will serve as infantry soldiers in the same Yorkshire regiment.

The 17-year-olds declared their oath of allegiance to Queen and country when they enlisted at Huddersfield’s Army Careers Information Office, joining Third Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment.

The brothers, who live in Liversedge and studied at Spen Valley Sports College, will begin training this month at Catterick, North Yorkshire.

They will take part in live firing and learn how to operate a firearm, how to live in a battlefield, take part in team- building exercises and, once training is completed, will take part in their passing out parade in front of friends and family.

Martin said: “Taking part in the MPC (military preparation course) has made me more relaxed about joining the Army; I have a good idea of what to expect when I go to Catterick and I can now concentrate on enjoying my time there, making new friends and learning how to be a soldier.

“Even better is the fact that I will have my best friend and twin there to share all of my experiences with.”

Nathan said: “We’ve wanted to join the Army since we were really young and we were members of the Spen Valley Army Cadet Force, so we know exactly what careers we wish to follow.

“I think it’s quite rare for people our age to know what path they want their lives to take and even though we’re well prepared, I’m still a little nervous.”

Keen rugby and football enthusiasts, Martin and Nathan will have the opportunity to play sport with their regimental teams and compete against other military teams.

Warrant officer Nick McConnell, Army recruiter in Huddersfield, said: “To have a pair of twins enlisting into the Army on the same day is a rarity, let alone two young men who are joining the same regiment and will undertake their training together.”
