How York City were relegated from Football League
Saturday 24 October
York 1 – 3 AFC Wimbledon
After just two victories in the league saw City scrapping at the foot of the table, Wimbledon travelled north to Bootham Crescent. York found themselves a goal down inside 15 minutes after an Ade Azeez strike set the foundations for his side’s win, with the hosts going on to lose their next eight.
Tuesday 24 November
Portsmouth 6 – 0 York
Heading into the half-time changing rooms a man down after Jonathan Greening saw red, York were obliterated in the second period, conceding a whopping six goals. It would certainly not have been one to remember for the faithful that made the 550 mile round trip in blistering conditions.

Hide AdThe York players could tuck into their Christmas turkey in celebratory mood after a grinding 2-1 result over The Shrimps drew an end to the club’s longest losing streak in history. With waterlogged pitches causing abandonments against Gillingham and Northampton, City had to wait another nine days before attempting to create momentum.
Saturday 2 January
Yeovil Town 1 – 0 York
Travelling to Huish Park against relegation rivals Yeovil, a 40th minute Matt Dolan penalty sealed the win for the Somerset club in what was a nervy affair. After four points from their previous two games, City’s form was duly halted.
Saturday 5 March
Dagenham & Redbridge 1 – 0 York
On the back of four straight defeats, The Minstermen faced The Daggers knowing that a win would enhance their survival hopes whilst denting their opponents’. After Russell Penn’s red card in the 57th minute, the North London club capitalised with the extra man when Joss Passley stole the winner 12 minutes from time.
Tuesday 19 April
York 3 – 1 Portsmouth
In need of some Harry Houdini magic to stay in the Football League, York’s 3-1 victory over Pompey at least saw them gain revenge for the earlier season humping. With news of Stevenage’s win filtering through the terraces, relegation to the Conference was all but confirmed barring a miracle.
