FORMER Rotherham United player Peter Kioso says he opted to move to Championship newcomers Oxford United because he knew 'what the club stood for' after rebuffing interest from second-tier rivals to join.

Kioso completed his move to the U's earlier this week with the Millers understood to have made a profit on the versatile defender, who they brought in from Luton Town two summers ago.

The 24-year-old was recalled from a season-long loan at Peterborough in January, having made a big impression during his time at Posh.

Discussing his move, Kioso - speaking to BBC Radio Oxford's The Dub podcast - said: “I heard there were a couple of clubs interested, but once I heard Oxford were interested, for me it was a no-brainer because I knew what the club stood for, where they’re planning to go, and how they’re looking to move forward.

"As soon as I heard of the interest, it just made sense for me. I feel like I’ll be at home here, and that’s why I’ve done it."

Meanwhile, Kioso has revealed that he is hoping to use his time at Oxford to boost his prospects of international recognition with DR Congo.

The player is also eligible for the Republic of Ireland, but his preference is to represent Congo.

His cousin is Luton midfielder Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, who represents Congo.

Kioso added: "I was born in Ireland, but I qualify for DR Congo. My cousin plays for DR Congo as well, so I’ll probably be leaning to DR Congo more, just so I can play with my cousin.

"Every footballer wants to play internationally and I’ve got a couple of my friends that I grew up with who are now playing internationally.

"It’s good to see because I’m happy for them, and I’m proud of them, because every footballer wants to play internationally."
