Italian giants provide Hull City with early test for 'Walterball'

Serie A side Fiorentina will give Hull City coach Tim Walter a good opportunity to test how his players are taking to a new style of football when they visit at the end of next month.

The July 30 friendly is the first home game confirmed for the German coach, who has been recruited to bring a more exciting brand of football to East Yorkshire after winning renown for his attacking football with Stuttgart and Hamburg in Germany's second tier.

It has been reported that a visit from Premier League Newcastle United, possibly the previous weekend, is in the pipeline but as yet Hull's only other confirmed pre-season friendlies are trips to Doncaster Rovers (July 23) and Reading (August 3).

The Championship season is due to start on August 10 with the fixtures published on Wednesday at 9am.

Fiorentina are thriving as the phoenix club of the former Italian and UEFA Cup champions who went bankrupt in 2002.

Since then they have worked their way back from Italy's fourth tier to in two seasons, and reached the 2023 Conference League final before finishing eighth last term.
