Dark horses Leeds United can make play-offs - Ken Bates

LEEDS United chairman Ken Bates insists the club can reach the Championship play-offs this season.

Despite a rollercoaster run-up to the end of the season, Mr Bates says the clubs above Leeds “almost don’t want promotion”.

The Elland Road side are currently three points outside the play off zone after their 1-0 win at Millwall, with five points separating Brighton in fourth place and Leeds in tenth.

Describing Leeds as “dark horse” contenders, Mr Bates said on Yorkshire Radio: “It is the most peculiar season. It is like it was a couple of seasons ago. It is almost as if nobody wants promotion, but we do.

“We have seven games remaining and we can still do it. We can certainly get into the play-offs and then after that it is anybody’s chance.

“We have four home games out of the last seven and they are all winnable. We could be the surprise dark horse coming through the pack. Let us hope so.”

Four of Leeds’ last seven games are at home against teams lower down the league.

Mr Bates also revealed that plans were in place for an “extended” pre-season programme involving friendlies at home and abroad.

He said: “What we’re planning is extended pre-season friendlies both at home and overseas. There’s a tournament on the horizon.”
