Rotherham United keep 'options open' on star assets as they play waiting game

YET to make a new year transfer breakthrough, Rotherham United also have no option but to play the waiting game on several senior players offered fresh terms.

The Millers have tabled new deals to five players and just one has expressed a desire to commit so far.

The influential trio of Chiedozie Ogbene, Ben Wiles and Dan Barlaser, who has been linked with a move to Middlesbrough - see their contracts expire in June alongside Viktor Johansson and Wes Harding.

The club are understood to have a 12-month clause they can trigger in the contract of Wiles, who is sidelined with injury.

Boss Matt Taylor, who has confirmed the club have turned down bids from clubs for some players already in January, said: "The one which I expected to be resolved should have been released by now.

"I think I said possibly ten days ago it was going to be released in the next couple of days and I look absolutely (silly) for saying that as nothing has still happened in the last week and a half.

"That is not in my control and I don't think it is in the players' control. I think there's (still) a bit of finished bits and pieces within the agent and ourselves as a club.

"But I still expect it to be announced and good news, but I won't put a time frame on it as I won't keep doing it if it's not going to happen.

"The other players have been open with us in their communications and dialogue.

"But there's no interest from those players at this moment in time to sign those contracts.

"They are keeping their options open and we want to keep ours as well in terms of how we use that money elsewhere or keep that offer going depending on the player in question."

The Millers are down to the bare bones for the weekend FA Cup trip to Ipswich and unlikely to be able field a full bench.

Wiles, Tom Eaves, Georgie Kelly and Grant Hall are all definitely sidelined, while Taylor will err on the side of caution with Ogbene and Lee Peltier unless he is fully convinced of their fitness ahead of the tie at Portman Road.

Meanwhile, the club are still waiting for clarity from Arsenal on whether loanee Brooke Norton-Cuffy will stay at Rotherham.

Taylor added: "We are still in the same situation. It is still my feeling and belief it will be down to Brooke and Arsenal. He is featuring in a bit-part at the moment and he's obviously playing some good games this season and exposed to some incredible experience for a young player.

"While for whatever reason, he has not started our first few games, he is still a big part of our plans.

"But if Arsenal and the player feel there's better opportunities elsewhere, then we will understand and accept that.

"We are constantly looking at - not how we can free up space - but how many loan spaces we have got in the squad and have they are used and the actual value we get on that pitch in relation to every game.”

Meanwhile, Taylor says that there has been no dialogue with either Huddersfield Town midfielder Jon Russell or former Sheffield Wednesday loanee Connor Wickham, who have both been linked with moves.
