Wednesday boosted as strike duo return from injuries

SHEFFIELD Wednesday are set to be boosted by the return of strikers Chris O’Grady and Ryan Lowe for tomorrow’s home game with Exeter City.

O’Grady, who joined the Owls in a £350,000 deal from Rochdale, has missed the last eight games after aggravating a foot injury on his debut against Bury.

Lowe, meanwhile, suffered an ankle injury on his debut against Charlton Athletic four games ago following a £100,000 move from Bury.

Assistant manager Chris Evans described the pair’s return as ‘significant’ yesterday but there is no guarantee either will start as strikers Gary Madine and David McGoldrick both scored last weekend against Yeovil.

“The whole of football is about scoring goals and any good squad should have a minimum of four recognised strikers competing for a place,” said Evans. “It’s been frustrating for the manager, having signed Chris and Ryan, to be denied of their services but they have both worked hard with the physios and the medical team and a decision now has to be made about how quickly we select them. They are good problems to have, if they are problems, but it’s just great to have a quota of strikers available again as we have not had it before.”

The Owls will be without David Prutton tomorrow after the midfielder suffered a thigh injury in training. Both Chris Lines and Ben Marshall are available, however, after shaking off illness.

The Owls have confirmed that next month’s Steel City derby against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane will be beamed back to Hillsborough.

Supporters will be seated in the South Stand and Grandstand watching a big screen on the Hillsborough pitch.

Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £5 concession and go on sale next Monday to season ticket holders and members.

Sheffield United captain Nick Montgomery has been warned that he faces a fight to get back in the team by manager Danny Wilson.

Montgomery, 29, has missed the last five games with an ankle injury but is available again for tomorrow’s trip to Wycombe Wanderers.

Michael Doyle, Kevin McDonald, and Lee Williamson have played central midfield roles during Montgomery’s absence and the Blades have maintained their status as joint leaders of League One.

Wilson said: “Monty is a fantastic professional but he knows, as well as anyone, that competition for places is now getting red hot. Getting back in the team is going to be difficult for anyone. The fact that we have got our skipper fighting for his place says everything about us right now.”

Former Blades defender Stephen Jordan, meanwhile, has extended his trial at Rotherham United in a bid to land a contract.
