Notts County complete signing of former Bradford City and Portsmouth man from Sunderland

Notts County have paid Sunderland an undisclosed fee to secure the services of former Bradford City goalkeeper Alex Bass.

The 26-year-old managed just two senior outings for the Black Cats after joining from Portsmouth in 2022. He had not been first-choice at Pompey either and spent the final months of his Fratton Park stay on loan at Bradford.

He racked up 21 appearances for the Bantams in the second half of the 2021/22 season, playing under both Derek Adams and Mark Hughes. Bass was loaned out to AFC Wimbledon last season and was ever-present, featuring on 48 occasions.

He has now been given an opportunity to lay down roots as a number one with a move to Meadow Lane. Among his new teammates is Matty Platt, who joined the Magpies from the Bantams last month.

Notts County’s recruitment lead Richard Montague said: “We believe Alex was the best-performing goalkeeper in League Two last season – and rank him very highly among his peers in League One – so we’re absolutely delighted to welcome him to Meadow Lane.

“Along with fellow new defensive signings Matty Platt and Jacob Bedeau, he’s a commanding presence who we feel will give us a huge advantage in dealing with the threats we struggled against in 2023-24.

“He’s also a fantastic shot-stopper, backed up by the fact he kept 16 clean sheets last season, and a player who we believe has a lot to offer on the ball, which is so crucial to the way we play.

“Alex is another signing who, at 26, brings considerable EFL experience while also having the peak of his career ahead of him. We’re excited to see what he can achieve at Meadow Lane.”
