The story

The scene is set at Christmas in the Edwards family home. The family is getting ready for its Christmas party and young Clara imagines the wonderful things that the night may bring.

The party comes to life with guests and dancing and Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives with presents from his travels. He presents Clara and Frederick with a strange wooden soldier dolls.

Clara is awestruck by her little wooden man (even more so when she learns how he can crack nuts) but her brother Frederick, who has already been teasing her, is jealous of her gift and a fight ensues. The toy lies broken on the floor as a tearful Clara has to go to bed. But her mysterious uncle stays behind and begins to cast his magic…
